  • 100 times better that Poland, Germany and Ukraine become nuclear powers in the following period of 5-10 years and protect themselves properly from Russia. They can't depend on foreigners France, UK and USA for protection. It's very unreliable to depend on some foreign country. Russia respects small North Korea more than it respects Germany, Poland ,Ukraine, Scandinavia. Wonder why?

  • Experience has shown the wind farm failure in El Hierro in the Canary Islands. The experience feedback on the island's energy autonomy by means of intermittent energies is a fabulous disaster. The installations cost 80 million euros for a production of only 34% thanks to the particularly very windy location. The rest of the time it is necessary to resort to the thermal power station. The inability of the wind turbines to supply 100% of the electricity to the island of El Hierro in the Canaries should have served as a lesson and put an end to all current installation projects. Men are unable to learn from their mistakes!

They have exported excess electricity which is unstable and inferior and imported stable and superior one. However the tactic no longer goes well. Too much unstable electricity flows into European power grids and makes it fragile. I think that selling excess and unstable electricity to stabilize its own power grids is like pushing their failures onto others.

The problem is that for renewables to match the reliability of fossil fuel, the storage of renewable energy needs to approach an infinite value, It just will not happen!

  • OK but if all of the US states were perfectly interconnected and equipped with enough renewables, it still wouldn't change the fact that solar would probably have to be disconnected in summer because, you know, summer basically happens in all states at the same time (solar load goes up when demand goes down). And you're still going to need load following plants. And if you want to go for nuclear, they can do load following, but they deteriorate faster due to cyclic fatigue... Really, i don't see the point of large scale rewables implementation until it's implemented along same-day and year-round storage facilities.

With today's technology we would have to replace every inch of forest land and farm land and wet land with solar panels and wind farms and that still wouldn't be enough.   • Respectfully, I think you still ignore the two major issues of wind and solar Intermittency Sheer amount of land area that must be dedicated to them Michael Shellenberger discusses those at length here No matter how much green capacity you install....you still have to face the intermittent issue Yes, there are currently batteries but those are vastly costly, require gargantuan mining, and only last so many recharge cycles before they are degraded (typically about 2 yrs). You discussed those issues in one of you other vids. Then to land area, due to the far lower energy density of wind n solar compared to coal, nat gas, and especially nuclear, they require FAR larger land areas to obtain the same installed capacity as say a nuke plant. But they still have the intermittency issue that a nuke plant does not As Michael points out, if Germany had invested their $580 billion in nuke plants they would already be 100% green for energy production . But they are not and won't be for years And then, as we see in California and Germany...with that shift to wind and solar has been a dramatic increase in electricity prices for consumers. How can that be if wind and solar are so much cheaper? What is causing the higher prices? But in Europe, we see France (mostly nuke) pay far lower prices for electricity and.....have far lower CO2 emissions for their electricity production than Germany.   • Dropped ball on this one. Dubbed 'Real Engineering', but not revealing all the problems of this interconnector projects. Like, surprise, the sun is not shining over the whole of Europe almost at the same time. Most of the wind capacity is on the Atlantic coast, so when Atlantic is calm, the whole Europe drops on wind generation. And while it's interconnected, it might do down at the same time if there's no capacity to meet peak demand. We were already on the verge of it happening several times. Next, passing energy over a distance means losses. If it's AC line - big losses. If it's DC line, less big losses, but expensive end stations. Superconductors? Upcoming, needs ton of R&D and costs double of a gas pipe with the same energy transit capacity. There are a lot of problems that make 100% VRE generation impossible.

  • The Hornsdale power reserve in Australia was the world’s biggest back-up battery when it was built in 2017. It had 129 MWh of storage (equivalent of 3225 40 KWh EV batteries) yet it cannot store enough energy to buffer solar. Why? It can provide a total of 70 MW for just 10 minutes or 30 MW for 3 hours. That's TINY. What it does is buffer a wind farm so that when the wind dies off it gives the utility enough time to bring a Natural Gas fired turbine on line. To store enough energy from a solar farm the size of one nuclear power plant (1000 MWe) to last through one single night would require a battery about 90 times bigger than Hornsdale (more in the winter when daylight hours are few) but Hornsdale cost over $70 million US dollars. Even a battery 90 times larger than Hornsdale costing $6.0 billion wouldn't be anywhere near big enough to buffer the solar farm through a single day of cloudy weather, let alone a week. Do the math. That's why batteries won't turn solar a reliable source. No matter how many solar farms you have in the US, there will be many hours when the entirety of the US is dark, so a connected grid isn’t the answer either. Think!

  • PhD Policy scholar here, I wrote and taught a course on U.S. energy policy in particular. When you talk about California fearing loss of governance of its market, you've err'd. That's Texas. CAISO is interconnected and under the jursidiction of the FERC. Texas' ERCOT grid is entirely intra-state, aside from a laughably miniscule DC connection in the north of the state. Your discussion about why this is a problem still stands, obviously, but if you ever hear about a state in the USA 'fearing loss of governance authority' you can always bet it's "We can secede whenever we want" Texas. The source you cite is talking about the merging of CAISO with a bunch of other grids on an administrative level into a larger RTO.

Europe is doing so good that they have an excess of green energy and have to pay people to take it away blah blah blah blah blah blah blah So why is Germany mining all that brown ignite coal??? You know, Brown lignite the lowest grade, dirtiest, most polluting, lowest BTU content coal that there is. Are they eating it for breakfast cereal in the morning? Maybe they're making pie crusts out of it. And China, wonderful China is leading the world in green energy. They're so good and they're so great if only we could be more like China. But doesn't it seem funny that China was still manufacturing brand new coal-fired steam locomotives up until the year 2000? China was operating coal-fired steam locomotives in some of the most filthy dirty mining operations I have ever seen. And they just retired their coal burning steam locomotives in 2018.

  • I miss in this vid the important point of power storage. Yes a fully integrated european powergrid will help to better smothen out lows and peaks in powerproduction, but if you want to go 100% renewable (so no coal, no gas (unless produced with renewable energy), no nuclear power) then you need ways to store a lot of power, especially for the winter months. For example in half of december 2020 the production of renewable power in Germany was very low, since there was little sunlight and also not much wind. Pumped storage power plants wont cut it, as their construction is dependant on topography, so suitable spots are either limited or extremly expensive to create. Using batteries as a powerbuffer is possible, but if Europe really wants to be fully renewable until 2050 (which actually isnt the goal, the goal is to be fully CO2 neutral, which isnt the same) then there should be already a lot of planing and construction going on, considering how long it takes to plan and finish such a project. If there are even enough ressources available to pull it off. So personally i am very pessimistic towards that 2050 goal, unless nuclear power will have a revival. The more stable power is produced, the smaller is the need for power storage.

  • According to wikipedia Norway only has 3 pumped storaged power plants. In reality they don't pump water up but instead won't let it fall down. They close the valves at their hydroelectric power stations and save the water for later when they can import cheap electricity from other parts of europe.

  • The Western Australian government has just launched a trial (opt-in) power tariff system. we have an epic amount of solar, about 30% of residential households have solar, so have a vast amount of relatively uncontrolled power injection through the day. the new tarriff system is set to 8c/kwh between 9am-3pm, but 55c/kwh from 3pm-9pm. when everyone has the lights, aircons, cooking appliances etc running, but little solar. then from 9pm-9am, at 20c/kwh. our base rate is 29c/kwh. we are heavily coal dependent, with a bunch of big power stations in the coalfield. also have alot of gas, fed from far north gas fields. but its not cheap as it should be for a sovereign gas source. the renewable factor has caused one of our biggest power stations (bluewater) being written off for about $1 billion. we have no mountains for pumped hydro, and no big batteries, yet. this tariff makes domestic batteries *very* appealing. our grid is hugely long way from the nearest interconnected grid, 2,500 km to the edge, n 3,500 km to the center. but a DC interconnect to the east coast could be hugely profitable. when the east coast is getting dark, we would still be baking in sun. Nice to think about, it'll be a while until it exists. but it has to be the future.

  • Dependent on France continuing nuclear power. To keep keep the lights on. The Gemini solar project got a billion dollars to be built. Generating only 670 mega watts. RE Ginna nuclear power plant cost 500 million in current dollars, and produces 570 mega watts. Transmission losses are almost all at the last drop down to customer voltages. Super high voltage lines basically lose no energy. And hydrogen is %@$ing garbage. Stop wasting money and breath on olit.

  • Once you integrate low current tidal power 98% can be done by 2035 to 2040 w/o much energy storage very early. Tidal turbines aka "wind turbines under water" for ebb and flood flows is available 24/7 along coastlines for baseload currently provided by coal. The night/day gap of solar and the lull days of wind can be bridged by this easily. Any excess can be stored for mobility and heat. So together with Solar and Wind we can easily progress as all major population centers are reasonably close to tidal regimes and shorelines. And it's these fertile alluvial lowlands we need to urgently protect from rising sea levels. It's this soil we can't replace in food production. It's these metropolitan areas we can't move in economies in short time. This is where your own personal life is likely happening or mutually tied to trade. Your countries self-organisation is networked to world markets by nearest major port facilities no matter where you live. So you shouöd ask politicians how they intend to secure your countries stakes in global tidal power land grabs coming up. How they secure your participation in the emerging tech and industry. Enjoy the look into their empty blank humilated stares back or a funny talk with a truly well informed person.

  • It is not only possible to be 100% renewable by 2030, but be Carbon Negative by then as well( we have to tell/act it like it is, not based on what we think we can or can’t do), if we transitioned the £€$Billions of fossil fuel subsidies onto funding a Carbon Negative Algea Bio Fuel transition. We could permanently sequester 10’s of Billions of Tons of CO2 every year just in the UK.   • Living in Ireland... I think hydroelectricity is something that would work well for us along with wind power. We're surrounded by water and if we keep close to the border but more than 1.6 miles (the average distance the human eye can see) we could be producing more green energy without the visual pollution everybody likes to complain about. As for marine life, we've seen them make homes out of hydroelectric stations before leading to a whole array of marine studies that can be done. I think it would be pretty cool overall and a worthy financial investment.

  • You should see the interconnectivity of Indian Grid. they do energy trading everyday and have a central control hub(NLDC) and 5 Zonal Load Dispatch Centres The National grid has the TagLine, One Grid, One Frequency. It is a good example how interconnectivity should be done.!

  • It is a scam in this respect. Forests are cut down (among others Georgia USA) chopped and shredded. wood chips from forests loaded on ships for Europe. All those steps take LOTS of Diesel Fuel. In Europe the former Forests are BURNED at power plants to make electricity. SO Now there are less trees to absorb co2 and release O2. And more co2 from burned trees that take 50 years to grow back. Idiotic bio energy scheme. Could have just burned Natural Gas, released the same or less co2. And Not Burned Oil shredding trees and Bunker crude in the ships. And we would still have the trees absorbing co2 and releasing o2. A PHONY "Green" SCHEME.
